If you’ve been following along with our blogs, we’ve covered some basics of our beginnings, highlighted our products, and updated you on the latest GS merch drop. In this blog, we’ll be digging deeper into our true tale as we take you back to the golden era of pot smuggling and the origin story of our main character: Barry “Flash” Foy.
“He was destined to be huge… There was nothing else Barry could do.”
Thus went one of the many recollections of “Flash” as told by a fellow smuggler. In his younger days, Barry had that same unmistakable spirit that took him on his wild adventures later in his life. His first experience dipping his toe into the world of crime happened in high school:
Typical for a party in those days, the beer ran out and so did the money, so Barry took it upon himself to save the day. Driving off in his Chevy, he returned “in a flash,” smiling, with frosty cases of beer in the back. (He’d crashed the car into the back door of the local pool hall and grabbed all he could find.)
He would stretch this instinct for ingenuity and cunning into the wildest journey(s) of his life…
Figuring it Out
Having no clue what he wanted to do after high school, Barry felt himself pulled in all sorts of different directions. Because he viewed pot as the least harmful of the other known substances at the time, he fell into the Columbia, SC scene, supplying the locals and tourists.
As he gradually gained a reputation around town and the local law enforcement caught wind, he naturally gravitated south to Florida, making friends with the movers and shakers of the underworld. Their Jamaican connections were extremely attractive to Barry’s ambitions, and pretty soon he was preparing for his first foray into the exotic world of international weed smuggling.
The First Major Load
Finding out that he suffered from seasickness on his first-ever voyage, needless to say the 10-day trip seemed like an eternity. When the old motor finally got them to Jamaica, this part of the trip went as smooth as it could, with the bales of marijuana loaded with no incident, he and his companion began the trek back.
The next leg of the voyage did not go as smoothly for Barry. Needing to refuel in the Bahamas and fearing being caught, they threw the bales behind some rocks on a kay and Barry waited while his fellow smuggler took the boat to refuel on the mainland. While he waited, the mosquitos were so bad that he had to wade in the water just to keep from being bitten to shreds.
Finally, with the boat fueled up, they tossed the bales back on board and made the journey back to Florida. Thrilled and satisfied, the job was a success. Minor mishaps aside, after this adventure, Barry’s mind and his appetite were firmly affixed on bigger scores…
