The Benefits of an Alias

In the shimmering world of shadows and discreet affairs, the tale of Barry “Flash” Foy stands out, a narrative woven with the threads of aliases and a life lived on the brink. His story, reminiscent of the intriguing plots of classic caper films, unfolds a compelling argument for the utility of an alias, particularly for those embarked on ventures not entirely within the bounds of legality.

The Ease of Identity Transformation

In the bygone era of the Gentlemen Smugglers’ heyday, acquiring a passport was as simple as a trip to the post office, a stark contrast to today’s rigorous processes. This ease of identity transformation laid the foundation for Foy’s journey under the alias Cletis Willard Skipper, and later, Brad Kallenbach. These personas were gateways into worlds where Foy could navigate freely, untethered by his true identity’s complications.

The Legend of Cletis Willard Skipper: An Alias Crafted by Necessity

Few tales are as compelling as that of Barry Foy, known to some by his daring alias, Cletis Willard (CW) Skipper. In a time when the world teetered between the analog past and the digital future, Foy navigated the gray areas of legality with a cunning that was as ingenious as it was necessary.

In the 1970s, the simplicity of obtaining a passport was something one could barely fathom today. It was a time when bureaucracy was still shouldering its way through paper, rather than bytes, and a photograph and a swift handover of a form could grant one the ticket to traverse the globe. For Barry Foy, this system presented a golden opportunity—a loophole ripe for the taking.

Yet, to wear an alias is to bear the constant burden of remembering who you are supposed to be at any given moment—a challenge Foy met with a mix of trepidation and thrill.

Understanding the power of perception, Foy crafted business cards that hailed him as a promoter of country music, tied to the heartstrings of Nashville. These cards were his armor and his key to doors otherwise closed. In the vast theater of the world, where every meeting could be a potential risk, these cards allowed Foy to blend into the background, assuming the role of a benign figure in the music industry rather than a mastermind of smuggling.

Traveling under the guise of Cletis Willard Skipper, Foy encountered curious souls and prying eyes, but his story remained consistent. Each inquiry into his profession was met with the same narrative—a promoter caught in the whirlwind of music tours and talent scouting. Like a scene straight out of the movie Catch Me If You Can, Foy navigated his world of aliases with a grace that belied the constant danger of his true profession. The film, a favorite of Foy’s, showcased the art of deception through the many lives of Frank Abagnale Jr., a tale that resonated with Foy’s own labyrinthine journey through identities.

The International Real Estate Mogul: The Tale of Brad Kallenbach

July Blog Video – Barry's Aliases from GENTLEMEN SMUGGLERS on Vimeo.

In the colorful, twisting narrative of Barry Foy’s life, the late 1970s marked another turn in the identities he inhabited. This new chapter began with the shedding of one alias and the adoption of another: Brad Kallenbach.

A friend of Barry’s knew the real Brad Kallenback, a man without a passport, which conveniently aligned with Barry’s need for a new and untraceable moniker for himself. The process was simpler back then; the absence of photos on driver’s licenses turned identity acquisition into an almost trivial pursuit.

Barry, now Brad, ventured to the passport office armed with the borrowed driver’s license. The absence of a photo on the license was a loophole ripe for exploitation, and soon, equipped with a new passport, Brad Kallenbach, the International Real Estate Agent, was born.

The supposed real estate mogul’s business was haute couture fiction. Brad was not just any real estate agent; he was an international purveyor of properties, able to spin stories about brokering castles in Europe, beachfronts in the Caribbean, or eclectic estates in unlikely corners of the world. Business cards circulated bearing his name and grand title, each exchange adding a layer to his persona.

Barry’s globetrotting had provided him with a trove of locales he could discuss convincingly, from the lush jungles of Costa Rica to the sandy beaches of Jamaica. He could paint verbal pictures so vivid that people could nearly feel the tropical breeze or hear the distant roar of the ocean surf. Barry, as Brad, could tell tales of foreign lands with the ease of a seasoned traveler.

But beneath the polished veneer of Brad Kallenbach, the schemer’s life was a tightrope walk. Each casual conversation was a performance, a scene in the grand play of his life. Barry thrived in this role; Brad was international, mysterious, successful—a composite of all the places Barry had been and all the characters he had met.

In every sense, Brad was an easier role to play than Barry’s previous personas—less baggage, more freedom, a straightforward narrative. Yet, as with all things in Barry’s life, the specter of discovery always loomed close.

A Veil of Legitimacy

Aliases offer more than just a new name; they provide a veil of legitimacy and purpose. For Foy, business cards indicating his association with country music in Nashville or later as an international real estate agent were not mere pieces of cardstock but were his ticket to a life unexamined. They allowed him to weave intricate backstories and assume roles that offered him freedom and, importantly, a degree of safety from scrutiny.

Social Engineering & Improvisation

The use of aliases facilitated a form of social engineering, allowing Foy to manipulate his interactions. By assuming roles—he could engage with people without arousing suspicion. This chameleon-like ability to adapt and improvise was essential for his operations and survival. Analogous to an actor without a script, Foy’s aliases required him to perform convincingly in any given situation, relying on wit and presence of mind.

Communication in the Shadows

The narrative of Barry Foy’s use of aliases also encapsulates a bygone era of communication. Before cell phones and digital traceability, answering services and payphones were the tools of the trade. These methods, archaic by today’s standards, allowed Foy to maintain his aliases and conduct his affairs with a layer of anonymity that modern technology has all but eroded.

The Downfall

Yet, for all their benefits, aliases are not impenetrable shields. Foy’s story arc, climaxing with his capture in 1985, serves as a cautionary tale. The very fabric that he wove so carefully—aliases, assumed roles, and the intricate web of lies—eventually entangled him. When the authorities closed in, it was an alias, given up by a confidante, that led to his undoing.
