In the 1970s and 1980s, Maryland’s Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay became key locations for marijuana smuggling, with local waterways and remote coastal areas offering ideal conditions for trafficking operations. Smugglers, often using small fishing boats, private planes, and knowledge of secluded inlets, transported marijuana from South America and the Caribbean into Maryland. Kent Island, Tilghman Island, and the small towns of Lusby and Crisfield, were central to these operations. These areas, with their isolated docks and coves, were popular smuggling sites because they allowed smugglers to offload large quantities of marijuana with minimal risk of detection. Other rural spots in Dorchester and Somerset Counties, surrounded by dense woods and waterways, were also strategic landing points. The Gentlemen Smugglers then distributed their treasure via Interstate 95, one of the most important drug trafficking corridors on the East Coast. I-95 runs through Maryland, connecting it Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City.
