Who are the ‘Gentlemen Smugglers’?
First things first. You might be wondering, Who are the Gentlemen Smugglers? From the early 1970s to the mid 1980s, led by legendary kingpin, Barry “Flash” Foy, this crew of homegrown outlaws owned the illegal marijuana trade from Massachusetts all the way down to Florida.
From their origins in coastal South Carolina, they navigated treacherous ocean waters, sacrificing personal safety, space, sleep and sanity to deliver more than 200 tons of grass and hash to the East Coast.
They built a global empire that stretched from Colombia to Lebanon, from Jamaica to Thailand. And they became the main targets of Operation Jackpot, the opening act in President Reagan’s War on Drugs. They lived life like an epic chase that inevitably cost them their freedom.
They were known as the Gentlemen Smugglers.
What is the Significance of the Term: ‘Gentlemen Smugglers’?
Here’s how the phrase ‘Gentlemen Smugglers’ originated:
Two rules were sacrosanct: no guns and no smuggling cocaine. They felt guns were unnecessary and, in fact, invited violence. Similarly, this is why they chose not to traffic cocaine.
While it was a more lucrative product, cocaine smugglers invariably toted automatic weapons. Given their standards and their college educations, the two men were nicknamed “the Gentlemen Smugglers.”
